A Life

Dublin, the present and 40 years ago. Following the remarkable international success of Hugh Leonard’s autobiographical comedy, Da, the playwright wrote A Life, a beautiful sequel with most of the same characters, including the incorrigible Da himself. He uses an extraordinarily original dramatic device, tracing the lives of his central characters as both teenagers and adults simultaneously, with the two worlds weaving in and out of each other, playing the past against the present, and the immediacy of reality against the selective charm of memory. The fascinating main character, Drumm, is one of the great roles and characters in modern Irish drama, as he comes to terms with his life, and exchanges barbs and witticisms with his lifelong nemesis, Da. Humane, witty and touching, A Life is a remarkable play which will find a place in the hearts of every audience member.
